If you’re moving, one of the best things you can do is to spend some time de-cluttering. Why move boxes of items you’re not going to use in your new home? When you de-clutter, it doesn’t mean you have to throw out or donate everything – instead, you can make some money, which can help with moving costs. Here is our guide on how to do a yard sale to simplify the Parker moving process.

How to Do a Yard Sale:

Plan Ahead

If you know you’ll be moving in the next year, start collecting items for your yard sale. This will save you time: You won’t have to spend time deciding which items to sell, or keep. If you decide to sell 2 items every week, at the end of the year, you’ll have 104 things to sell!

Get Prepared

The key to a successful yard sale is preparation. Follow our “how to do a yard sale guide” and you’re sure to have a successful sale!

• Pick a Date: Decide on a date after checking the weather and your schedule. Don’t forget to check the calendar to see if the date you’ve chosen is a holiday or there is a big event happening locally.
• Advertise: To maximize the number of people who attend your yard sale, be sure to advertise. Post on community boards at your local library, grocery store, and health clubs. Also, don’t forget community pages online, such as Craigslist, Facebook community groups, and other websites that advertise yard sales. Finally, don’t forget to post signs pointing your direction from major roads in the area!
• Pricing: A few days before your sale, go through everything you are going to sell. Make sure it is clean, and group items by type. Next, price every item carefully with a quality sticker. It’s worth it to spend a few dollars on good price stickers so that you don’t have to come up with prices on the day after a sticker has fallen off.
• Display: Take a look at the things you are selling – can you use a table to display other items? Be sure to mark your own tables that you’re using for display as not for sale to avoid confusion. Hang clothing on a clothing rack, and arrange items so that they are easy to see.
• Research: Spend a couple weeks before your yard sale checking out other yard sales and garage sales in your area. You’ll get insight into pricing, and may find some good ideas on what to do (or what not to do!). Do some research to make sure you don’t need a permit. Check with your local government, or even the HOA to learn more.
• Day Before the Sale: Mow your lawn and cut your grass, as well as making sure that items that aren’t’ for sale are out of your garage or the sale area. Also, start making your signs (be sure they’re bright, so that passing cars can spot them). Head to the bank, and get some cash so that you can provide change for shoppers.
• The Day of the Sale: The big day of your sale has arrived. Get up, eat a good breakfast, and set up your yard sale. Remember to put some of the bigger ticket, nicer items out front to catcher the eyes of passers-by! Meanwhile, have a friend head out and hang up the signs. Set up a speaker, make sure you have a place to sit that is out of the sun, and be ready to have some shoppers!
