There are a few more things to consider when you’re moving a distance rather than to a new home in the same area. Have a Plan
Moving out of state requires a bit more organization than if you were moving a short distance. After all, if you’re moving within the same city, you don’t have to find a new job, figure out a new doctor, or get new license plates for your car. Sit down with your family and figure out all the details, such as choosing a moving company, determining which tasks need to be completed when, and who will accomplish each one.
Get Started Early
Don’t start packing the day before the movers arrive. Instead, start going through your home months in advance. Start by getting rid of items you no longer need – either throw them out or donate them to someone who needs them. Take the time to complete each part of your plan. It’s much better to spend time researching a mover than to rush and choose someone who doesn’t provide excellent service, and makes your move that much stressful.
Make a Post-Move Checklist
There are more things to consider and take care of when you move across the country. Make a checklist of things you need to accomplish. There are many articles with suggestions. Here are a few to get you started:
- Register your car at your new address
- Re-key your home
- Find a new doctor/dentist/chiropractor
- Bake cookies and take them to your new neighbors
- Update your voter’s registration
