Helpful Tips for Moving with Pets
You have good news – the offer has been accepted and the details are finalized. Now all that’s left is for you to prepare to move into your new home, apartment or condo. While you begin making your checklist of to-do’s before your move it’s important to remember your furry family member. If you’re preparing to move and you have four legged (or winged) family members like cats, dogs, rabbits, or birds there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind. That’s why we’ve compiled a short list of helpful tips for moving with pets. That will hopefully help make the whole process a success – let’s begin!
Helpful Tips for Moving with Pets
1. Update I.D. Tags
When you’re preparing to move we know you have a lot on your plate – from boxes, scheduling movers, to updating your mailing address. One thing you’ll want to do for your furry friend is update their identification. This means if you have your new address you’ll want to update your pets I.D. tags if they have them on their collars.
2. Update Microchips
In the U.S. most dogs and cats have electronic microchips implanted in their skin. While it’s easy to remember to update their external I.D. tags a lot of people often forget to update their microchip information. If you are unsure on how to update their microchips your regular veterinarian can help you.
3. Check for Required Vaccines
When you’re moving to a new town, city or even state it’s important to research what vaccines may be required. Since this can be different from county to county it’s important to do a little research to make sure your pet it’s up to date.
4. Travel Necessities
As you’re preparing to move we recommend making a file for your furry friend. In this file you should include copies of their vaccine and medical records. You’ll also want to make sure you have any prescriptions or supplements with you. You’ll want to keep this file with you while you travel – for example having it packed in the glovebox is a good idea.
5. Pack Their Bag
Just like how you’ll need snacks, a change of clothes and shoes when traveling your pet will need a few things as well. Pack them a bag with items they will need such as – a supply of food, water, dishes for food and water, a bed, and blankets or toys that they might find comforting.
